Safety improvement works scheduled for Southend Road/Park Road/Foxgrove Road

Works are due to begin in the week commencing June 2nd for safety improvements at the intersection of Southend Road, Park Road and Foxgrove Road. They are anticipated to take approximately eight weeks.

The safety improvement scheme will introduce a mini-roundabout, a zebra crossing on Southend Road north of the mini-roundabout, a parallel (combined pedestrian and cycle) crossing south of the mini-roundabout, alongside minor changes to the road and pavement layout. The scheme layout provided by Bromley Council is shown below.

  1. This mini roundabout will, in my view, cause as many problems as it is intended to solve, and cost £125,000 of public taxes in the process.

Oddly the roundabout design is assymetrical to the west, not in the middle.

I cannot see how cars, long vehicles and buses can navigate a mini roundabout especially doing right turns.

I think the 354 bus turning right into Foxgrove Rd will actually have to go to the right of the roundabout. The northbound 54 I forsee having to confusingly drive over the mini roundabout, so what is the point?

I asked Bromley Traffic Dept for a copy of the swept path analysis two weeks ago and have not had the courtesy of a reply.

The DFT rules for mini roundabouts have been ignored, where they should only be created where the traffic volume on each arm of the crossing is similar.

Southend Rd is the busy main A road, already slow but now all traffic instead of proceeding, is obliged to halt whether there is traffic on the side roads or not.

This will create even more pollution, engines idling, delays to drivers, bus passengers and businesses than there is already.

Drivers often cannot easily see cyclists or their intentioned movements on a mini roundabout. Cyclists have to signal with one arm and steer around the tight circle with one hand with little notice to drivers as to the chosen exit they will take

As above, this creates as many if not more problems than hoped to solve.

The £70k+ non consulted Albemarle Rd alterations have been largely taken out. I predicted the problems but the engineers and councillors went ahead.

This is, IMHO, another half baked scheme. If having to be removed afterwards that will be double the £125 installation public cost in local government austerity

There is also the 8 week installation period to cause unnecessary jams, frustration and pollution.
